Payman Maadi, also called Peyman Moādi (source unknown) is an Iranian-American screenwriter, actor and director. He has been nominated for an Academy Award for his role in About Elly. His other credits include Camelot and Invictus. He is most known for playing opposite Robert DeNiro in the movie, The Godfather.
Like many young Iranians who started their film career as screenwriters and then went on to be actors, Payman Maadi started his film career as a screenwriter. His first script was released in 1985, titled The Things They Did Together. It tells the story of two friends from Iran who fall in love and marry each other. Their married life is depicted very romantically.
After working on a script, Payman Maadi decided to take on acting full-time and went on to appear in a number of popular motion pictures, such as The Deerhunter, Das Boots, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Who’s There 2, Once Upon a Time in America, Catch Me When You Can, The Pursuit of Happyness, Pretty Woman and Stagecoach. However, his biggest break came in 1986’s Anahata. This is an amazing film, which depicts the imprisonment and execution of an opposition leader. Payman Maadi plays the part of Mohammaad as he tries to defend his friend against the brutal acts of the president’s secret police force.
Another Iranian actor that worked on a script was Behnampour Karimi. He began his film career in Hollywood as an actor on the series Deuce Bigalow. Behnampour played the role of a warlord in three episodes of the television series. After that he went onto other popular shows such as Everybody Loves Raymond, M.A.S.H., and Everybody Love Someone. Before he went on to act in mainstream movies such as Ramaze and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, he wrote and directed his own film, Missing.
Payman Maadi is not the only actor from Iran who has gained international recognition. Asghar Farhadi is another famous Iranian actor that has received many awards and recognition for his films. Asghar Farhadi started his acting career when he was just 17 years old. His first two films were featured in the Best Foreign Language Selection at the 1996 Academy Awards. After that he went on to star in a number of successful films including The Kite Runner and The Pirates.
In recent times Payman has been receiving positive criticism from the international media for his performances in some movies. For instance, the movie The Informant! which was released in 2021 was widely panned by critics for containing numerous errors. The movie nevertheless went on to earn more money than any other Iranian film at the time. A number of other movies have also been accused of poor filmmaking and shoddy acting. One of the most notable of these is the film We Own Ourselves.
Payman had been studying English when he joined forces with Saleh Khodabadi in order to create The Informant! However, it was his starring performance that caught the attention of Hollywood. He went on to play the character of Saleh Khodabadi in five other famous Iranian films that are now considered some of the best Iranian movies ever made. Apart from that he has also acted in some Hollywood movies such as Armani Manoosh, Dolphin Tale, and Paris Is Not Paris.
Payman has continued to make movies during his career in Hollywood where he has displayed his impeccable acting skills in such films as The Informant! Payman is yet to win any major award for his work in Iranian films but whatever he does win will be an accolade for him. The success of Payman as an actor is further testament to the immense popularity of Iranian cinema.
