August Diehl was an American stage actor before turning to Hollywood, where he appeared in such memorable films as Rebel Without a Cause, Blow Out, Who Loves Me, Viva Zapata, etc. He later appeared in the TV series MacGyver, and its spin-off Die Hard, playing John McClane. August Diehl’s career spanned parts of four decades from 1965 to 1980. After retirement, he concentrated on acting again, appearing in some more successful films such as Friday the 13th, The Perfect Score, The Dead Zone, etc. Later he moved on to working as a producer, although he returned to acting occasionally.
August Diehl was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and grew up in a rather poor household. His father, a carpenter, died when August was just eight years old, leaving his mother to take care of the family. He attended Weber State University, where he pursued acting, playing football, and even tried out for the football team. Although he didn’t make the school football team, he did play in football for the city of Oberlin College, which was located just outside of Cleveland.
After college, August Diehl went on to Los Angeles to study acting with such noted figures as Howard Hughes. During this time he also became known as the voice behind the character Dr. Bobolis in the animated series Beverly Hills. This show was one of the few animated programs in prime time that did not have a large sum of budget, and it ran for eleven seasons. Diehl played the role of an insurance man who had a crush on a girl who worked as a beauty salon receptionist. He had also previously appeared on stage in various plays.
In 1985, August Diehl was again in the spotlight when he landed the role of leading man in the film The Man With One Red Shoe. The movie, which tells the true story of an Olympic athlete that defected to the West Coast, was one of the most successful films of its time and featured exciting supporting characters. The film also featured an excellent ensemble cast, which included Kurt Russell, George Clooney, Bruce Willis, Marilu Henner, and Michael Douglas.
Diehl next went on to play the lead role of Hans Landa in The Prophecy. This film, which was released in theaters in the spring of 1988, went on to become one of the best films of the year. It starred George Clooney, who won the best actor award at the Academy Awards, and future Star Wars: The Force Awakens star, John Boyden. The film was directed by David Fincher, who also produced and wrote the screenplay. For his part, August Diehl once again played the role of a surgeon, this time curing a cancer patient, with Matt Damon as the head of a rogue artists’ group called “Theaires.”
In the summer of 2021, Diehl will once again be seen in a role in the new blockbuster movie called The Shape. He will portray a doctor that is a key component in the plot. The Shape is based on the true story of a medical researcher, Dr. Lewis Wilson, who was found dead in a hotel after contracting a deadly disease. This film, which debuted in summer, is directed by Michael Bay and written by Alex Paziman. One interesting thing about the film is that August Diehl, again playing the role of a surgeon, was not in any of the films previously featuring Wilson.
In the last few years, August Diehl has played a major role in the world of theater. In addition to his award-winning role of Christoph Reyer in the award winning drama The Secret; he was nominated for an Academy Award for his supporting role of Michael Douglas’ character in Tomb Raider. In addition to those roles, he also appeared in the musical Any Given Sunday as well as the animated feature Finding Nemo. Then in late spring of this year, he will also appear alongside Will Smith in the biopic Black Ocean. In total, August Diehl has only just made a handful of movies, but that list is very small when compared to the actor’s varied career.
One other aspect to note about Diehl, apart from his role as a medical doctor in The Shape, is that he is also a member of the Screen Actors Guild. He has always been open about his love of acting and is well respected within the trade as an actor and as a human being. So it should be no surprise to anyone that in late 2021 he will again be seen in a role that adds to his resume of works. Whether it is a role in the March series Star Wars: The Last Jedi or some other upcoming project, we can expect that in the near future we will see more of August Diehl.
